Prompt: Write a poem about your favorite bird.
upon the golden shore I watch
the sandpiper-inconspicuous and plain
she hovers above the water
cautious
as though she’s afraid to fly too high
her tiny peeping voice
can barely be heard
above the gulls and the waves
she and I are kindred spirits
I understand her plight
when the world is full of loud voices
impossible to ignore
it feels like my words are worthless
like I’m screaming into the void
no one cares to know me
past my exterior and into my soul
and yet
I see the sandpiper. I see her.
And I love her entire being.
